During the winter months, the Division of Air Quality issues wood burning advisories through the news media and over the internet when ambient concentrations of PM 2.5 are elevated.
- Green: A green light means that wood and coal burning stoves and fireplaces may be used, but we ask that they be used in a proper manner to reduce smoke emissions.
- Yellow: A yellow light warns that pollution levels are beginning to build up and we encourage people to curtail polluting activities.
- Red: A red light indicates that pollution levels are high and wood burning is not allowed. At that time, the Department also asks industry to take proper steps to reduce emissions and encourages drivers to find alternate methods of transportation.

During the summer months, the Utah Division of Air Quality calls a “No Drive Day” through the news media and over the internet when elevated concentrations of ground-level ozone are forecast. We ask people to reduce driving and other polluting activities, particularly from 2-8 p.m. during May through September when the highest ozone concentrations usually occur.
