DAQ used air quality modeling to complete the PM10 maintenance plan for Salt Lake County, Utah County, and Ogden City. Modeling tools have advanced in the years between the development of the orginial PM10 SIP in the late 1980's and today. The PM10 SIP is based on receptor modeling and county-wide rollback of PM10, SO2, and NOx. In consultation with EPA Region VIII, DAQ has decided to base the attainment demonstration for this new SIP/Maintenance Plan on a grid-based aerosol modeling approach using UAM-AERO. The attainment/maintenance demonstration will be based on the results of this model.
Completion of the UAM-AERO modeling project requires gridded meteorological and emissions inputs. The meteorological inputs were created using a hybrid modeling approach to capture the dynamics of strong winter temperature inversions. These periods of prolonged atmospheric stagnation trap pollutants in the valleys during the winter. The SMOKE modeling system will generate the emissions inputs.
