Utah is known for its varied and complex terrain features. This shaded relief map of the state along with a close up of the UAM domain illustrates the diverse topography.
Much of Utah's terrain is within the Basin and Range geographic province, characterized by mountain bounded valleys. Typical climatic conditions in Utah include large high pressure ridges. Coupled together, temperature inversions within valleys are common; cooler air drains into valley locations, below layers of warmer air. These situations can remain stagnant for extended periods of time, contributing to the decline of air quality. This image is based on a digital elevation model (DEM), showing the basin and range topography as well as a close up of the UAM domain, along the Wasatch Front.
