Oil and Gas Industry Air Shed Management

Oil and gas development is increasing in the State of Utah due to national and worldwide demands for energy. It is important to understand the impacts that this growth may have on local and regional air quality.

Uintah Basin: natural gas production is increasing significantly in Utah and Colorado.
North Slope of the Uintahs: oil and natural gas production have declined significantly in the last 10 years.

Four Corners: Most of the oil and gas production in the Four Corners region is occurring in Colorado and New Mexico.
Castle Country/Canyonlands: coalbed methane production in Carbon and Emery Counties has been declining since 2002.
Central Utah: the Central Utah Thrust Belt could be developed in the future.

The oil and gas producing regions have been grouped into study areas.

The Utah Division of Air Quality has established an Oil and Gas Air Quality Partnership to evaluate the impacts and to determine the best approaches for managing the air shed. The Partnership has the following goals.

The Partnership is currently focusing on the Uintah Basin because this region is experiencing the greatest growth in oil and gas production in the state. Data will also be collected for other regions, with the goal of creating a comprehensive plan for the State of Utah.
